Our Mission

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a family makes. Yet finding the right fit — not just academically, but culturally and socially — can be overwhelming. FindGreatSchools was created to make this process easier.

We aggregate data from official government sources across all four UK nations to give you a complete picture of every school in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Our demographic insights help you understand the community around each school, so you can find a place where your family truly belongs.

Our Data Sources

All data on FindGreatSchools comes from official, publicly available government sources across all four UK nations:

England

  • GIAS — Get Information About Schools, providing the core directory of 52,000+ establishments including type, phase, address, and contact details.

  • DfE School Performance Tables — GCSE and A-Level results, pupil demographics (FSM, EAL, SEN), attendance rates, and post-school destinations.

  • DfE School Census — Detailed pupil ethnicity breakdowns across 18 categories, enabling community-level demographic insights.

  • Ofsted — Latest inspection outcomes from Ofsted monthly management information releases.

Wales

  • DataMapWales — Welsh Government geographic information service providing school locations, phase, and gender of entry for ~1,450 schools.

  • StatsWales PLASC — Pupil Level Annual School Census providing pupil numbers, detailed ethnicity breakdown (19 categories), and age range data for Welsh schools.

  • Estyn — The inspectorate for education and training in Wales (inspection body noted on each Welsh school profile).

Scotland

  • Scottish Government School Roll — maps.gov.scot geographic data service providing directory information, coordinates, and pupil roll for ~2,460 schools.

  • Scottish Government School Level Summary Statistics — Annual census data covering free school meal eligibility, additional support needs (ASN), EAL pupils, attendance rates, and ethnicity.

  • Education Scotland — The inspection and improvement body for Scottish schools (inspection body noted on each Scottish school profile).

Northern Ireland

  • Department of Education Northern Ireland — Reference data for ~1,100 NI schools including school type, management type, and demographic statistics (FSM, SEN, EAL).

We only use publicly available, aggregated data. We never share individual pupil information. All demographic data is presented at school level and sourced from official government publications. Our goal is to empower families with information, not to label or rank communities.
